How Corsets Are Created
Historically, corsets were made of different material depending on your wealth and status. There are a few different parts to a corset. The fabric was made out of silk or satin for the wealthy, starched linen for the middle class, and cotton for the lower class. No matter what they were made out of, however, the general pattern remained the same depending on the time period. The contents of the corset, however, slowly developed over time.
There are front and back plates to a corset, around which the fabric goes. While many people believe that whale bone was the stiff center pieces, it was actually baleen. Baleen is actually hair that is surrounded by enamel and hardened to a specific shape. Once the Baleen whale was destroyed, steel became the next item to hold together the front and back of the corset. Sometimes wood or horn was used as a substitute.
Elastic was used to make the gussets and still is today. The corset fabric was often decorated, covered with lace and silks, or embroidered to signify wealth and status, and today remains a symbol of beauty and elegance on modern day corsets. Once those pieces are done, silk thread was used to sew all of the pieces together including the hard back and front panels, the side pieces, and the fabric covering.
The actual size of the lacing in the back and the boning is determined by the natural body shape, and what the desired body shape is no matter what the corset design. The back lacing can only be laced to a certain point before it can go no further, sometimes producing fat rolls, so the boning in the front is the more important of the two. The thickness of the front boning determines how much you are able to move and breathe, and how much smaller or larger respective body parts should be.
No longer using bone, corset makers today use nylon-coated steel that is more flexible than bone but still provides you with the support that you need to look your best. The time required to make such a piece has been greatly reduced thanks to modern day technologies such as the sewing machine and patterns that you can follow, but it is still a process that requires meticulous detail and concentration.
When you order your corset now, be sure that the measurements are taken by a professional and that a pattern is selected which will best emphasize your shape and stature.
