An Overview of the Recall on DePuy Hip Replacements

It is hard to believe that many big names in the orthopedic industry have recalled hip replacements. This makes others wonder if perhaps they have faulty products after 90,000 units have already been recalled.

2010 DePuy Hip Implant Recall

DePuy Orthapedics said they were recalling two types of hip implants on August 2010. In the past few years many complaints regarding the hip implants have been filed with the Food and Drug Administration. From 2008 onward, the number of complaints associated with the failure of this device has reached nearly 400 in toto. According to a rough estimate, 93000 people around the world have malfunctioning hip implants in their body.

Orthopedic doctors have come to the consensus that specifically the component of DePuy metal-on-metal hip implant with a narrow window for proper placement had a design flaw that made it difficult to implant properly. One of the causes of the implant's flaws may be the that the ASR cup isn't as deep as it is in some other implant devices.

According to The New York Times, the potential for generating large amounts of metal debris during normal wear can negatively impact soft tissue and cause serious health issues for patients, as well as other problems associated with the DePuy hip replacement.

Hip Revision Operation: There are No Easy Answers

Those who have had hip replacement surgery with the DePuy ASR implant have found it to be problematic and the operation to correct the matter has proven to be lengthy and complicated with not only no promise of improvement but often creating more problems. There is a reduced amount of bone as a result of the previous implant which is a problem in subsequent surgeries. There is a four hundred percent increase in the chance of gettin a dislocated hip by replacing a hip implant.

According to data that DePuy itself recently received, a surprising number of people who received the hip replacement implant experienced pain and other symptoms that, in many instances, could not be resolved until a second surgery was performed. According to the latest data, some 12 percent of all patients who had received the ASR resurfacing implant, or about one in eight, had to have a revision surgery some five years after their initial operation. One in eight patients (13 percent) who received the ASR total hip replacement also had to have this exact same surgery done five years later.

Is it true that DePuy is now the target of lawsuits?

Lawsuits are being filed to compensate patients for the pain, suffering, other physical injuries and financial hardships they have endured as a result of having the DePuy hip implant that was recalled. According to complaints charges, DePuy did not tell his patients or physicians about the defective ASR hip implants. A hip recall of the DePuy ASR hip has taken place following two years of complaints, requiring expensive and debilitating revision operations. As DePuy ASR artificial hip is known to malfunction a lot, one in every eight patients receiving these devices will have to go for corrective surgery.

One lawsuit, recently filed in New Orleans, alledged that DePuy Orthopedics failed in recalling a hip replacement device. In an article dated September 30, 2010, the Louisiana Record reported that in 2008, Ms. Ida Mosley had hip replacement surgery that resulted in pain, soreness and difficulty walking. Although most hip implants are successful, Mosley was not one of the lucky ones. Because of complications, Mosley had to undergo a second hip implant surgery.

The Mosely's lawsuit claimed failures take place within 2 years of implanting the Depuy ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing platform.

There are 13 individuals who have joined a lawsuit filed against DePuy Orthopedics. Patients have reason to believe that Depuy was aware of potential hazards of the prosthesis but neglected to inform them.
