Best Guitar Riff Ever: How to Play Smoke On The Water
I believe a cool guitar riff should have this 3 top attributes: it has to be strong, memorable and simple. When somebody asks me to recommend a great riff to play on an electric guitar I usually go with this classic hard rock milestone: 'Smoke On The Water' from Deep Purple's Machine Head album. Remember when a song belonged to an album instead of an endless mp3 file list? I certainly do and I hope that at least the album concept is not lost in this constantly evolving current music industry. Well, back to the riff, there are 3 different ways I found to play this, you can choose the one that better fits your current guitar skills or pick the one you just like the best.
* The first and easiest way to approach this melody is by playing E G A, E G Bb A, E G A G E on your sixth string (lowest in picth): 0 3 5, 0 3 6 5, 0 3 5 3 0.
Listen to the tune to catch the rhythmic pattern.
* The next approach involves playing in the actual song key (G minor) and it includes playing 5th or power chords as follows:
G5 Bb5 C5, G5 Bb5 Db C5, G5 Bb5 C5 Bb5 G5
Bb5, C5 and Db can be played on the 5th string, based on the 1st, 3rd and 4th fret respectively. Or you can play all the chords with their roots on the 6th string: 3 6 8, 3 6 9 8, 3 6 8 6 3.
* The third one is my favorite and it's how I usually play it: a sequence of inverted 5th chords that when played with heavy distortion actually blows wigs away:
Start with an open D and G chord (open forth and third strings) Then play a little barre chord pressing both strings first on the 3rd fret and then on the 5th. Have you got it? Now play the following frets, always on the same strings: 0 3 6 5, 0 3 5 3 0.
Actually on Deep Purple's recording you can hear a combination of the second and third example. For the right hand I recommend to use down stroke pick movements, but you can play this finger styled as well.
