Hello Sleepwear
IS YOUR SLEEPWEAR KEEPING YOU AWAKE
Research done on adult sleep habits show that the average time that an adult sleeps is marginally over six hours, and that adults typically spend seven to nine hours in bed each day. With age, sleep patterns change with the over 50s at greater risk of having more and more interrupted nights.
So, if we’re spending a third of our day in bed and trying to manage our changing sleep patterns, shouldn’t sleepwear be one of our most important items of clothing ?
Another feature of advancing years is changes to skin’s sensitivity. Our skin loses elasticity as we get older and it becomes thinner with reduced nerve endings, so it's more likely to bruise or get damaged. And as people get older, they seem less able to wear certain types of fabric because their skin feels more sensitive.
This again begs the question… shouldn’t our choice of sleepwear take all these factors into account ? Most people will linger for ages over an evening outfit to be worn for a few hours at a special occasion, but pay scant attention to something they will spend a third of their day wearing.
There’s no doubt that fabric is a major contributor to the comfort rating of sleepwear.Research has proved that pure cotton is the best fabric for nighties and pyjamas as it is hypoallergenic, breathable and light.Cosy in winter and light in summer, natural cotton is preferable to man-made fibres such as polyester and nylon which are not as gentle on sensitive skins.
One person who has listened to the needs of mature women (and men ) is Liz Collins who recognised a growing need for comfortable, wearable, practical yet gorgeous sleepwear. She started her business, Midsummernight's Dream, over 10 years ago and has been successfully selling thousands of pure cotton sleepwear, nighties and PJs across Australia and globally.
Speaking from her retail outlet in Perth, WA, Liz said the secret was in the cotton, the cut and the manufacture. She sources her 100% pure cambric from India – the best in the world, she said. Beautifully hand embroidered with cotton lace, French seamed to eliminate any rough edges that could cause skin irritation and generously cut to allow freedom of movement, the nighties and pyjamas have a reputation for putting wearers to sleep !
Available in a vast range of French-inspired designs and fabrics from long-sleeved winter PJs, nightgowns and leisurewear to light-as-a-feather summer nighties with butterfly sleeves and shoestring straps, Midsummernightsdream sleepwear has something to suit everyone. New designs and fabrics are released twice a year.
“As people move into middle-age, they seem to have less tolerance for rough or itchy fabrics and so the Indian cotton is by far the best fabric for sleeping in.Our cotton sleepwear can also go into the washing machine, is quick-drying and won't need much ironing - if any - so it travels very well," she said.
Middle age brings many changes. Here’s one you can take charge of. Changing your sleepwear may just mean you can say “goodnight” and mean it !
